About Sugar Lake

This wilderness lake is approximately 14 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide, with crystal clear water, two small islands, and a depth up to 300 feet. It is a hydroelectric reservoir with minimal cottage development on it. Recreational use is primarily by canoes, kayaks and small fishing boats. The fluctuating water levels and floating natural debris pose serious hazards for power boats and water-skiers. Primarily for safety and water-quality reasons, as well as to protect the waterfowl habitat, an application to restrict boat motors to 40 hp has been attempted. There are insufficient boat launch and parking facilities to accommodate day use power boaters, with the only public boat launch being at the 2-Mile campground. Most users of this serene lake are accustomed to the absence of large power boats.
